Al Kidney has recently retired from his position as Officer in Charge- Band of the South Australia Police having held that position since 2011, holding the position of Band Master for the preceding 3 years. A graduate of the Elder Conservatorium of Music he has remained actively involved in the local music scene as Music Director of several brass, concert bands, choirs and orchestras, competing successfully at national level.

Al joined the Army Reserve in 1991 and still serves with Australian Army Band Adelaide as a Warrant Officer Class Two, as the Training Warrant Officer. In 1999 he conducted the 10th/27th Royal South Australia Regimental Band’s first CD, “The Fighting Band”, to critical acclaim, resulting in an invitation to the 2002 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee. More recently he led the Police Band to Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th Birthday celebrations at Windsor Castle in 2016 where the Band performed as part of a Commonwealth musical birthday present for Her Majesty. The tour, a resounding success that put Australia and the State of South Australia, front and centre at this most prestigious Royal event, the likes of which may never be seen again.
