ADJUDICATOR: PETER HOPKINS
Peter has a wide range of experiences gained over the past 40 years. His Vocal teachers include James Christiansen at the elder Conservatorium of music, Norma Hunter, Robert Tasman-Smith, Sydney, and Andrew Field, UK.
Peter’s first professional singing was with the Australian Opera Chorus in 1978, in Sydney. He has since sung in many operas with State opera, SA, as well as taking over 30 principal roles in opera, G and S, and musicals.
He has had wide experience as a soloist in oratorio, having performed in the Messiah, Carmina Burana, Faure’s Requiem Mass, Christus in both the St Matthew and St John Passion by Bach.
Peter’s English song repertoire includes song cycles by Vaughn Williams, Finzi and Quilter, as well as Lieder and songs in French and Russian.
He has considerable experience as a conductor and director, having established the Pulteney Grammarphones at Pulteney Grammar and the Princes Music Theatre Company at Prince Alfred College.
Peter is highly regarded as a voice teacher and many of his students have progressed to take principal roles in opera and musicals in Adelaide as well as interstate and overseas.
In his private studio teaching at Glynde, Peter is keen to develop the vocal talents of students of all ages and he teaches pupils from 8 to 80.
He is now the Convenor for the Adelaide Eisteddfod’s Vocal Section.
