ADJUDICATOR: JEFFERY KONG

Jeffrey Kong - Music Educator - commenced his piano studies at the age of 14 and he performed both the Beethoven C minor and Chopin F minor concertos at the age of 17.  
He gained a scholarship to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with Alexander Sverjensky, Lea De Metre and Gordon Watson. Alexander Sverjensky was reported to have studied with Rachmaninoff.
 
After teaching at Newcastle Conservatorium and Canobolas High School in Orange, Jeffrey came South Australia to teach at Brighton High School (now Brighton Secondary School). He also continued his studies with Clemens Leske and Lance Dossor at Adelaide University.
 
Graduate studies took Jeffrey Kong to the US where studied chamber music with Gwendolyn Koldofsky, pianist to Lotte Lehmann, at the University of Southern California in 1980. On his return to Australia he worked as repetiteur at the Sydney Conservatorium Opera School before returning to is position at Brighton Secondary School. In 1992 an Italian Government Scholarship took Jeffrey to Pesaro where he studied with Lorenzo Bavai, pianist to Jose Carreras (one of the ‘Three Tenors’) at the Rossini Conservatorium in Pesaro, Italy.
 
In the past 40 years Jeffrey Kong has been at the forefront of music education in South Australia He was the Head of Music at Brighton Secondary School. Most recently he made contribution to music education at Wilderness School another outstanding Adelaide school.
 
He has performed at:
Schoenberg Institute, University of Southern California, USA. Shanghai Conservatoirum, Shanghai People Republic of China
St Peters Basilica, Vatican Italy
St Marco Cathedral, Venezia Italy
St Nicholas Church, Prague Czech Republic
Bruges Concert Hall, Belgium
 
Jeffrey recently retired from active school music education positions but maintains a strong interest in the musical development of young and aspiring musicians. Jeffrey also performed at the Inaugural Balaklava Eisteddfod Concert in 1997 and is back this year to adjudicate at the Balaklava Eisteddfod for the first time.
